AI Safety Use
Last Updated: December 17, 2024
BooxDay incorporates AI-powered features to enhance your productivity and planning experience. This document explains how we use AI, what data is processed, how your privacy is protected, and what you need to know about these features.
1. AI Features Overview
BooxDay uses artificial intelligence for the following features:
- Handwriting Recognition (OCR) – Converts handwritten text into searchable, editable digital text
- Voice Input Processing – Transcribes and intelligently parses spoken input into calendar events, tasks, or text
- Task Parsing – Analyzes and structures task descriptions, extracting dates, priorities, and actionable items
- Daily Planning Suggestions – Provides personalized scheduling recommendations based on your priorities and patterns
- Image OCR – Extracts text from photos and scanned documents
2. AI Service Provider
2.1 OpenRouter
BooxDay uses OpenRouter.io as our AI routing service. OpenRouter is a unified API that provides access to multiple AI models from various providers, including:
- Google Gemini (various versions)
- Meta Llama models
- Mistral AI models
- Anthropic Claude models
- Other open-source and proprietary language models
OpenRouter intelligently routes requests to the most appropriate model based on the task, cost, and availability.
2.2 Model Selection Strategy
BooxDay uses a tiered approach to AI model selection:
Free and Low-Cost Models (Most Features)
For standard features including basic handwriting recognition, task parsing, and daily suggestions, BooxDay uses free or low-cost models available through OpenRouter. These include:
- Open-source models (e.g., Llama, Mistral)
- Provider-sponsored free tiers (e.g., Google Gemini Flash)
- Cost-optimized models for simple tasks
Premium Models (High-End Features)
For advanced features requiring higher accuracy and capability, such as:
- Voice input processing – Requires advanced speech-to-text and natural language understanding
- Image OCR – Requires vision models capable of analyzing complex handwritten or printed text in photos
- Complex task analysis – Multi-step reasoning and context understanding
BooxDay may utilize paid premium models that incur per-request costs. These costs are subsidized through:
- One-time app purchase fees
- Subscription fees (if applicable)
- In-app purchases for premium features
We do not charge separately for AI API usage. The cost of AI features is included in the app price or subscription.
3. SemanticGenius: On-Device Intelligence
Before any data reaches AI providers, BooxDay's SemanticGenius engine processes your content entirely on your device.
What SemanticGenius Does (On Your Device)
- Extracts keywords from your memos, tasks, and events
- Identifies entities (people, places, projects mentioned)
- Detects patterns in your schedule and habits
- Finds connections between related items
- Classifies intent (action items, deadlines, follow-ups)
What Gets Sent to AI
When you use Smart Suggestions, Plan My Day, or similar features:
- Sent: Semantic summaries (keywords, patterns, associations) extracted by SemanticGenius
- NOT sent: Your full memo text, complete task descriptions, or raw handwriting
Example
If you wrote: "Call dentist to reschedule Friday appointment"
SemanticGenius extracts: call, dentist, reschedule, Friday, appointment + action: phone call needed
AI receives: "User has pending phone-related action item for this week, healthcare context"
AI does NOT receive your original sentence.
4. What Data is Sent to AI Services
3.1 Data Transmitted
When you use AI features, the following data may be sent to OpenRouter and subsequently to AI model providers:
- Handwriting Recognition: OCR-generated text from your handwritten notes (NOT the handwritten strokes or images themselves)
- Voice Input: Audio transcriptions of your spoken input (NOT raw audio recordings)
- Task Parsing: Text content of tasks and notes you explicitly request to be analyzed
- Daily Planning: Your stated priorities, goals, and scheduling preferences (NOT your actual calendar events or personal memos)
- Image OCR: Images you explicitly select for text extraction
3.2 What is NOT Sent
The following data NEVER leaves your device:
- Your handwritten strokes (vector data)
- Complete calendar events (unless you explicitly use voice input to create them)
- Personal memos or notes (unless you explicitly request OCR or AI analysis)
- Your Google Calendar data
- Boox Notes content (unless you explicitly share it with AI features)
- Any data you have not explicitly submitted to an AI feature
3.3 No Identifying Information
AI requests do not include:
- Your name, email, or account information
- Device identifiers (IMEI, serial number, etc.)
- Location data beyond timezone (which is needed for scheduling)
- Persistent user IDs that could track you across requests
4. Data Retention and Privacy
4.1 BooxDay Data Retention
BooxDay does not store, log, or retain any data sent to AI services. All AI requests are processed in real-time and discarded immediately after receiving the response. We do not:
- Keep copies of your prompts or AI-generated responses
- Build training datasets from your data
- Analyze your usage patterns for purposes other than app analytics (installation counts, crash reports)
- Share your data with third parties for marketing or research
4.2 OpenRouter Data Retention
According to OpenRouter's policies:
- OpenRouter does not store request data beyond temporary caching for performance.
- Requests are routed to the selected AI model provider and the response is returned to the app.
- OpenRouter does not use customer data to train AI models.
- OpenRouter does not sell or share customer data with third parties.
For detailed information, see OpenRouter's Privacy Policy.
4.3 AI Model Provider Policies
AI model providers (Google, Meta, Mistral, Anthropic, etc.) may have their own data retention policies. While OpenRouter selects providers with strong privacy commitments, we recommend reviewing their policies:
Important: Most major AI providers now offer commercial API terms that prohibit using customer data for model training.
5. AI Limitations and Accuracy
5.1 AI is Not Perfect
AI-generated content may be:
- Inaccurate – OCR may misread handwriting, voice input may misinterpret speech
- Incomplete – AI may miss important details or context
- Inappropriate – AI may generate unexpected, irrelevant, or offensive content
- Inconsistent – Results may vary between requests even for identical input
You are solely responsible for reviewing and verifying all AI-generated content before relying on it.
5.2 No Guarantees
We make no guarantees regarding:
- Accuracy of handwriting recognition
- Quality of voice transcriptions
- Appropriateness of AI suggestions
- Availability of AI features (they depend on third-party services)
6. AI Safety Best Practices
6.1 What You Should Do
- Review AI output – Always verify OCR text, parsed tasks, and AI suggestions before using them
- Avoid sensitive data – Don't use voice input or image OCR for highly sensitive personal information (passwords, financial details, medical records)
- Understand limitations – AI is a tool to assist you, not replace your judgment
- Disable if uncomfortable – All AI features can be turned off in settings
6.2 What We Do
- Minimize data transmission – Only send what's necessary for the AI task
- Use reputable providers – OpenRouter vets AI providers for quality and privacy
- No data retention – We don't store your AI requests or responses
- Transparent disclosure – We clearly indicate when AI is being used
- Cost transparency – AI costs are included in app pricing, not charged separately
7. Disabling AI Features
You can disable AI features at any time:
- Go to Settings → AI Features
- Toggle off individual features or disable AI entirely
- The app remains fully functional without AI – you can still use handwriting, tasks, and calendar features
Disabling AI features does not affect data already on your device. It only prevents future AI requests.
8. Cost and Sustainability
8.1 Why AI Costs Matter
AI model providers charge per request. Premium models can cost $0.01–$0.50 per request depending on complexity. Voice input and image OCR are particularly expensive due to the computational resources required.
8.2 Our Cost Model
To provide AI features without nickel-and-diming users:
- Free models first – We use free or low-cost models whenever possible
- Smart routing – OpenRouter selects the most cost-effective model for each task
- Subsidized costs – Premium model costs are covered by app sales and subscriptions
- Fair usage – We implement reasonable rate limits to prevent abuse while allowing generous everyday use
We reserve the right to adjust AI feature availability, rate limits, or pricing if costs become unsustainable. However, we commit to providing advance notice if any changes affect existing users.
9. Changes to AI Features
AI technology evolves rapidly. We may:
- Add new AI models or providers
- Remove models that become unavailable or too expensive
- Adjust which features use which models
- Change rate limits or usage caps
We will update this document if there are material changes to how we use AI or handle your data.
10. Third-Party AI Provider Terms
By using AI features, you also agree to the terms of service of the AI providers used by OpenRouter. While we select providers carefully, you should be aware that:
- Different AI models may be subject to different terms
- Providers may change their policies
- Some providers may have geographic or usage restrictions
OpenRouter maintains a list of supported models and their terms at https://openrouter.ai/models.

Version 1.1 – Last Updated: December 17, 2024
This AI Safety Use document is part of BooxDay's commitment to transparency and responsible AI use.
SemanticGenius Cross-Data Processing
BooxDay's SemanticGenius module creates intelligent associations by analyzing patterns across multiple data sources within the app. This section explains how this works and what it means for you.
How SemanticGenius Works
SemanticGenius uses Large Language Models (LLMs) to identify connections and patterns across your:
- Calendar: Event titles, times, recurrence patterns
- Tasks: Titles, priorities, completion history
- Memos: OCR-converted text from handwritten notes
- Preferences: Your AI Profile settings (life priorities, daily rhythm)
- Linked Notes: Boox Notes titles and keywords
This data is combined into contextual prompts and sent to AI providers to generate personalized suggestions. For example, SemanticGenius might recognize that your "Project deadline" event relates to several tasks and memo notes, helping you see the full picture.
Safety Considerations
- Data Minimization: Only relevant context is sent; we don't transmit your entire database
- No Training: Your data is not used to train AI models
- Encryption: All transmissions use TLS 1.2 or higher
- User Control: You can disable SemanticGenius features at any time
Limitations
SemanticGenius suggestions are AI-generated and may be:
- Inaccurate or based on incorrect pattern recognition
- Irrelevant to your actual needs
- Missing important connections
Always review AI suggestions critically and make your own decisions.
